After a mere 14 months of marriage, Sam Asghari, a 29-year-old Iranian fitness model, has filed for divorce from the 42-year-old hitmaker, Britney Spears, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ as the cause for their marriage breakdown. Asghari filed for divorce in August of 2023 and the pair are now in the process of awaiting final approval from the judge after completing all relevant paperwork for their financial settlement.
Thanks to what sources have referred to as an ‘iron clad’ prenuptial agreement, Spears’ $60-million wealth will remain intact following the split as Asghari has made no move to contest this as of yet. However, Spears has reportedly been paying for Asghari’s rent in his new apartment post their split, additionally intending to pay a six-figure sum to him – although exact details remain unclear. PageSix has claimed that Spears specified in particular that she will also keep “miscellaneous jewellery” and other personal items, including earrings she made before, during, and after her marriage to Asghari.
The pair first met back in 2016 on the set of Spears’ music video for her song ‘Slumber Party’ and began dating several months later. After 5 years of being together, Asghari then asked Spears to marry him in September of 2021. The couple enjoyed an ‘intimate’ backyard ceremony the following June which was attended by a host of the singer’s star-studded contemporaries, including Madonna, Selena Gomez, Drew Barrymore, and Paris Hilton.
Initial reports that the pair were facing ‘marital struggles’ first came to light in March of last year when Spears and Asghari were both photographed without their wedding rings. However, Asghari’s rep immediately refuted these allegations with a statement that he had merely removed his wedding ring for a movie that he was shooting at the time. Unfortunately, new reports of infidelity and other personal conflicts between the pair then appeared in the following months. Sources close to Britney maintain that these allegations are false.
In the aftermath, Asghari took to social media following his filing for divorce saying that, “After 6 years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I have decided to end our journey together. We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always.” He added: “Asking for privacy seems ridiculous [sic] so I will just ask for everyone including media to be kind and thoughtful.” Spears’ commented on her own social media accounts that she was “a little shocked” that the marriage had come to an end as “6 years is a long time to be with someone.” She also clarified that she felt no need to give her fans any further details as to why the marriage had ended as it was “honestly nobody’s business”.
