In a surprising turn of events, Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane and his estranged wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, have decided to abruptly cancel their divorce proceedings — an entire seven years after initially filing to end their 14-year marriage.
The couple, who share two teenage daughters, Billie (15) and Georgia (13), first announced their split in 2018 when Gayheart filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. However, despite being separated, the two have notably maintained an amicable relationship with the aim of prioritizing their roles as co-parents.
Gayheart and Dane’s decision comes as quite a shock to fans who are now speculating, along with the media, about the true nature of their relationship given the unexpected move. According to court documents obtained earlier this month, the couple officially filed to dismiss their divorce case on March 6. This happened just days before an impending hearing that was scheduled for March 20, with dismissal of their divorce subsequently being finalized on March 7.
Interestingly, the couple had already received multiple warnings over the years from the court regarding their lack of action in progressing proceedings. Most recently, in January, a judge issued a “final notice” to the pair, stating that if no progress was made, the case would be dismissed entirely. And so, it seems Gayheart and Dane have pre-emptively taken that step themselves.
Eric Dane, widely recognized for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan — affectionately dubbed “McSteamy” — on Grey’s Anatomy, has faced his share of public scrutiny throughout his marriage to Gayheart. In 2009, a scandal erupted when an explicit home video surfaced of the couple with a former beauty queen, Miss U.S. Teen Kari Ann Peniche. Additionally, Dane checked himself into rehab in 2011 to overcome a dependency on pain medication, later seeking treatment for depression in 2017 which lead to production delays on his television series, The Last Ship.
Despite these challenges, Gayheart has stood by Dane, and the couple remained together until 2018 when she decided to file for divorce. However, progress on finalising the split significantly slowed after 2019, with the only major development being the exchange of financial disclosures that same year. Since then, nothing much happened until the surprising turn of events on March 6.
Over the years, both Dane and Gayheart also appeared to have moved on romantically despite their divorce not being complete. Dane has been spotted on multiple occasions with 27-year-old actress Priya Jain and Gayheart was seen attending a pre-Oscars event in Beverly Hills in early March, accompanied by 77-year-old restaurant mogul Peter Morton.
However, despite their separate romantic pursuits, the pair have consistently maintained a united front when it comes to co-parenting. They were frequently spotted spending time together with their daughters, including during the COVID-19 lockdowns, which sparked rumours of a possible reconciliation at the time.
