Divorces often end up being lengthy, drawn-out litigious affairs that can typically last about 6-8 months and sometimes even longer in certain cases. However, Aquaman actor, Jason Momoa (44), and his partner of 17 years, Lisa Bonet (56), have completely bucked this trend by settling their divorce in its entirety after only one day had elapsed since official proceedings commenced.
The couple first announced their separation in January of 2022 via a joint statement on Momoa’s Instagram account which informed fans that they were choosing to ‘part ways in marriage’ after undergoing changes in their relationship due to recent ‘transformational times’ – a reference to the aftermath of the pandemic. They continued by stating that “We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy, but so that as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty. The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other to be who we are learning to become…Our devotion unwavering to this sacred life & our Children.”
Their ensuing divorce comes after only 6 years of marriage as the couple, who first met in 2005, officiated their relationship in 2017 after many years of dating and also welcoming two children, 16-year-old Lola and 15-year-old Nakoa-Wolf. Momoa famously claimed that it was ‘more than love at first sight’ when discussing the marriage on an episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden shortly thereafter. However, since that fateful night at a certain Jazz club where they were introduced as friends, the couple have now gradually grown apart in recent years due to conflicting schedules and priorities. Momoa reportedly chose to invest increasing amounts of time in his career, filming a string of films in quick succession as his success continued to rise. This apparently left Bonet in the position of having to shoulder the larger burden of responsibility in raising their children as she preferred to focus on home life and staying put in L.A.at their home residence instead of travelling with Momoa to each filming location.
It is therefore highly likely that discussions between Momoa and Bonet surrounding child arrangements and their financial settlement have been ongoing for quite some time, as evidenced by the remarkable turn around of their divorce. Court documents filed in the Superior Court of California show a confirmation of their marriage’s dissolution on this past Tuesday 9th January, right after divorce documents were filed by Bonet on Monday 8th. The two have opted to share custody and to jointly manage the living expenses of their children. Further, each party has waived their right to seek spousal support.
